DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY-07-S1

The goal of this class is to help you become a better photographer by examining the craft of quality photography.  This class introduces students to the world of digital photography, photojournalism, and fine arts photography. The law, ethics, and history of photography will complement the major units of study: operation and care of the camera, taking excellent photographs and video, aesthetics of images, composition and management skills. Some out-of-class time will be required, including the time to shoot school-related photo assignments.

There is a ten-percent deduction for each day an assignment is late.

How to do well in this class

  • Prepare to learn. Bring your camera, and regularly update your online portfolios.
  • Act appropriately. In whole group activities, raise your hand to speak, and listen actively. In small groups, function as a team member. For individual work, read and/or write silently.
  • Respect everyone and everything in the room.

Assessments: photos are assessed by technical merit and meeting deadlines.

Skyward: grades will be updated the 1st and the 15th of each month. We will use Judge Memorial’s standard grade scale, which is 40-40-20.

Authorship: The work you do in this class must be your own; if you plagiarize the work of another, you fail that assignment and are subject to the consequences as outlined in the Judge Handbook.

Contact info: It’s a lot easier to get in touch with me via email through my school email address. I’m usually at school until 4 p.m. every day.

BYOD: JMCHS allows students to use Personally Owned Devices such as laptops, iOS Devices, Android Devices, tablets, netbooks and cell phones with browsing capabilities for educational purposes. You may use these devices in this class with permission. Similar to other personally owned items, the school is not liable for the loss, damage, misuse, or theft of personally owned devices brought to school. All device maintenance and upkeep is the sole responsibility of the device owner.

Equipment: There is a lot of expensive equipment in the room that has taken years to accumulate. You can check this equipment out once you demonstrate that you know how to use it. The reason our equipment has lasted so long is that the people who use our cameras treat them well. If you break a camera because of carelessness, you pay for it. If a camera breaks through no fault of your own while on an assignment for class, we’ll figure out how to replace it as painlessly as possible. Bottom line: always treat the equipment with care, like it’s a baby.

Agreement: I agree to assume financial responsibility for the equipment my son/daughter has checked out. I will pay for any repairs needed, due to negligence, when the equipment is in my son or daughter’s control. I also agree to pay for, or replace with comparable equipment, any items lost or stolen while in my child’s care.
